"Paulicéia: Mário de Andrade" is a film in tribute to this famous brazilian writer who was born and spent most of his life in the city of São Paulo. What we see in the film is an allegory of the creation of one of his most famous literary characters, Macunaíma.
This work is also the first in a series of short animated films about the city of São Paulo in a project called "Paulicéia" and created by NUPA (São Paulo Animation Community).
Birdo was called to produce the film in collaboration with Céu D'Ellia, NUPA's director, based on a short film script winner of a contest on the theme "Mário de Andrade". The film's initial storyboard and character designs were created by the illustrator Laurent Cardon in a workshop with NUPA's students.
Our main challenge in the making of this piece was to achieve a result that had Birdo's DNA and at the same time incorporated the work developed in the previous stages of the project.
The first scene of the film is a historically accurate rendering of Anhangabaú Valley in the 20's, and was created on top of old documents and research by our team in loco. This is a famous spot in São Paulo's geography that has undergone great changes through it's history. We have dedicated special attention to the reconstruction of Martinelli building, the first skyscraper in Latin America and setting of Mário de Andrade's laboratory in the film.
The lab's interior was populated with objects collected by the writer in his famous expeditions and researched by our team in books and museum catalogues.
